Briggs Lake

A quiet, no-wake lake in Livingston County, close enough to Detroit and Ann Arbor for a weekend, far enough that you stop checking your phone.

On the water

No gas motors
Briggs Lake doesn't allow gas motors, towing skiers or tubes, or jet skis. It's more of a longstanding understanding among the homeowners than a posted rule, so use good judgment. Electric motors are fine, pontoons run them regularly, as long as it's not powerful enough to throw a big wake or make much noise.
Kayaks and paddleboards
Both houses keep kayaks and a paddleboard at the shoreline for guests. The Paddle Inn also rents an older pontoon.
Fishing off the dock
Both properties have their own dock. Largemouth bass, bluegill, black crappie and yellow perch are the usual catches. Bring your own gear.
Swimming
You can swim off the dock at either house.

Island Lake State Recreation Area
A quarter mile from The Black Marlin and half a mile from The Paddle Inn. It has hiking and biking trails, beaches, fishing docks, volleyball courts and picnic spots.
Kensington Metropark
Ride or hike through Island Lake and you connect straight through to Kensington. It's worth a full day.
Downtown Brighton
A few minutes the other direction, with the Mill Pond and the main street.
